In fact some experts theorize that the number is closer to one million or more. Chronic fatigue syndrome is estimated to be three times (although some people say four times) more common in females than it is in males. In fact the CDC estimates that for every 100,000 people that are afflicted by chronic fatigue syndrome, 522 of these are women while 291 are men. However be aware that either sex can still develop chronic fatigue syndrome but women do so more often than their male counterparts.</p>
<p>It is believed that for a very low percentage (less than ten percent) of those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome are actually aware that that is what is wrong with them. For this reason a very small percentage of the population has been properly diagnosed or is receiving the treatment they need to improve their health condition. Chronic fatigue syndrome has been studied for over two decades but little is known about what causes this largely mysterious illness. Due to the fact that the cause or causes remain unknown, it is not clear why CFS affects certain individuals in the population and not others. Many of the symptoms of CFS are similar to other health conditions such as fibromyalgia and that is why a proper diagnosis is very difficult to make. Due to the fact that the cause of CFS has not been determined to be related to an infection, an immune system problem or a metabolic dysfunction, no one treatment has been settled upon by the medical community. Most often treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome is on a &#8220;symptom-by-symptom basis.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of the first treatments to be tried for CFS is exercise programs in the form of graded exercise or pacing exercises. In the case of graded exercise (GE, GA or GET), this is a type of rehabilitation program that involves self-monitored or supervised activity or exercise that is graded. Pacing is a form of self-controlled rest and exercise that is designed to minimize an individual&#8217;s homeostatic disequilibrium. Still other forms of exercise are sometimes undertaken for pain relief and these include gentle forms of stretching, gentle yoga, walking, t&#8217;ai chi, and non-aerobic exercise.</p>
<p>The drug treatments prescribed for chronic fatigue syndrome run the gamut depending on what symptoms a patient is suffering from and how severe the symptoms are. There are antidepressants, antibiotics, amphetamines, sleep aids, and immune-modulating drugs. Sleep aids and pain relievers are the two kinds of drugs that are most commonly prescribed to patients. Many of those who suffer from CFS experience poor or irregular sleep patterns and therefore need a little help to ensure a good night&#8217;s rest on a consistent basis. Some patients are prescribed sleep aids while others are given the names of over-the-counter remedies.</p>
<p>Pain is a common side effect of CFS, especially when it comes to physical, neuralgic pain. Nerve pain of this type often responds best to tricyclic antidepressants, however other kinds of pain relievers can also be recommended. Those suffering from headaches and/or migraines need to seek out pain relievers that are suited for that purpose. In some cases hot water bathing and acupuncture have been shown to be helpful in relieving neuralgic forms of pain.</p>
<p>There are yet other types of treatments that are sought out to help those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. The herbal remedy passionflower has shown promising results as has Echinacea, licorice, lomatium, astragalus, ginkgo biloba, Chinese (or Korean) ginseng, Siberian ginseng, milk thistle, pau d&#8217;arco, St. John&#8217;s wort, kava kava, cat&#8217;s claw, ashwaganda, goldenseal and a variety of other ones.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Meditation is all about drawing oneself inward and learning how to breathe to bring about relaxation, serenity and calm both to the human body as well as to the mind. For that reason meditation is often considered to be an effective form of alternative therapy for chronic fatigue patients, especially the ones who suffer from a multitude of symptoms.</p>
<p>The characteristic symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are often referred to as primary symptoms and there are eight in total. First of all if a person suffers from cognitive dysfunction, which includes problems concentrating, or impaired memory or even memory lapses then CFS could be to blame. If a person suffers from &#8220;post exertional malaise&#8221; that lasts for more than a 24-hour period and it occurs after a strenuous mental or physical exercise then it is likely caused by CFS. If a person wakes up feeling unrested and unrefreshed morning after morning that is another symptom of CFS.</p>
<p>Other characteristic symptoms of CFS include persistent pain in the muscles, pain in the joints that does not include any degree of inflammation or swelling, headaches that are different than any a person has experienced before or headaches or a more intense variety, a sore throat unrelated to a cold or other respiratory condition and cervical or axillary lymph nodes that are tender.</p>
<p>Meditation focuses on the spiritual and its main focus in on relaxation, peace and the activities of the mind, seeking to slow the mind down to a different state of consciousness. Meditation is often used to concentrate the mind on listening closer to God and it is also commonly used as a means of personal growth and development. Some individuals choose to meditate as a way to alleviate stress from their lives while at the same time searching for a greater feeling of peace and tranquility. Many people choose to also practice yoga for further relaxation as yoga combines the mental relaxation with the physical.</p>
<p>Meditation is very closely connected to relaxation and therefore is sometimes referred to as being meditation relaxation. Other common terms include chosen relaxation and conscious relaxation. Many people choose to learn how to mediate in order to find a state of serenity where they can be at peace.</p>
<p>Mediation is much easier to achieve then most people believe it to be. In fact most people have exercised a chosen form of relaxation in one way or another. Even when you focus on something to the exclusion of something else, such as when you are writing a test, this is also a form of chosen or conscious relaxation. When you try to manage pain in one form or another, this is also a way that you meditate by way of relaxing your mind to cope with the situation at hand.</p>
<p>When you take a practical approach to pay attention to your breathing, such as when you engage in deep breathing (breathing that comes from the diaphragm) you are attempting to take your mind away from any worries or problems and take it to a better place where you are able to relax and be as calm as possible.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Chronic fatigue syndrome is a health problem that affects more people than multiple sclerosis, but few are familiar with the illness. In this article, we&#8217;ll be explaining some of the history behind our knowledge of chronic fatigue syndrome as a society so that you can see how our research practices and knowledge of the illness have evolved over the years.</p>
<p>Chronic fatigue syndrome was only recently classified as a type of illness, with the United States Center for Disease Control defining the symptoms of the syndrome in the year of 1988. When they released their information regarding the syndrome, they stated that the problem can be accurately diagnosed by doctors only when certain factors are present: an illness similar to the flu lasting six months or longer is one symptom, as well as a decrease in activity levels of fifty percent or more during that period. If these symptoms are present in an individual and doctors cannot find another reason why they may be experiencing the problems, chronic fatigue syndrome is the diagnosis. This method of diagnosing patients wasn&#8217;t as clear-cut as doctors wanted it to be, however, and so the definition of the syndrome was changed in the year 1994. In an attempt to make diagnosing the problem in a more clear-cut manner, the Center for Disease Control changed the definition so that more symptoms needed to be present in order for a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome to be given. In addition to the symptoms that were present in the 1988 definition, the 1994 definition stated that at least four other symptoms must be present for a diagnosis, which may include trouble concentrating or remembering things, a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, pain and swelling in the muscles or in the joints, no relief from sleep, or headaches that were previously not experienced by the individual. The new definition also stressed that doctors should ask their patients questions about their lifestyle in order to ensure that the problem that they are experiencing isn&#8217;t due to a more explainable reason than chronic fatigue syndrome, such as being overworked.</p>
<p>While we are learning more about chronic fatigue syndrome every day, there is a long way to go on our path towards being able to identify the problem in an easy manner. There has not been a universal cure discovered for chronic fatigue syndrome thus far, and many people use a variety of methodologies in order to experience relief from the illness, including medical treatments, therapy, lifestyle changes and alternative therapies such as Tai Chi and herbal remedies. Researchers continue to toil away trying to find the ‘magic bullet&#8217; that will show what causes chronic fatigue syndrome in individuals so that they will be able to treat it in a more efficient manner by addressing the source of the problem directly. Since the syndrome has only been recently discovered, chances are that the future will hold plenty of answers and relief for the one million Americans that suffer from the syndrome and countless others across the globe.</p>
